Karate of The Woodlands stresses child safety as it eases parent concerns
THE WOODLANDS, TX – Karate of The Woodlands has been a Woodlands-area mainstay for 35 years now, and about to celebrate its second anniversary in its most recent location in the Panther Creek Shopping Center. The masterclass dojo was originally founded in 1990 at its original Research Forest location by martial arts master Rick Prieto.
Recently, an instructor at a different Woodlands-area martial arts studio with a similar name was arrested for alleged sexual abuse of a juvenile. Because of the similarities in school names, Prieto and his staff have been inundated with calls from concerned parents. Everyone at Karate of The Woodlands is rushing to assure them of two issues: first, the alleged incidents and arrest have nothing to do with their school; and, second, that they constantly and consistently put child safety and parent comfort above all else.
Karate of The Woodlands is overseen by Lacey Walker, operations manager as well as Prieto’s daughter. Her daily duties include the integral aspect of keeping safety, communication, and overall operations protocols up to date.
“As Rick Prieto’s daughter, I was always taught from a young age to be aware of your surroundings and to always go to a person of authority like a parent or policeman if something doesn’t feel right,” said Lacey. “As a mom now, I feel that always and the safety of our staff and members are key with a proactive approach at all times.”
Lacey Prieto was raised in a structured, safe, and loving martial arts environment by her father, who is a 9th degree black belt in karate, a 2nd degree krav maga black belt, holder of a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, and is additionally trained in muay thai, tae kwon do, tang su do, boxing, wrestling, and sho to kan. 2025 marks the start of his 57th year in martial arts. He also has a longstanding history and friendship with Chuck Norris.
Another dedicated staff member of Karate of The Woodlands is Kathy Miranda, the office manager and a key player on the team since 2015, ensuring smooth operations and excellent support for families.
“We follow simple safety rules such as being mindful of our surroundings and knowing your parents’ phone number, but safety at the studio is a team effort and we look out for each other,” she said. “I am constantly letting students know they can come to the office at any time if they need anything, and that their parents, when not in the lobby, are just a phone call away.”
The experienced and dedicated staff is rounded out by Rick Prieto, the original program creator, and Ella and Eva, female black belt instructors who assist in classes, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
