The Woodlands Christian Academy’s Production of Disney’s Newsies Sells Out to Enthusiastic Audiences
THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The Woodlands Christian Academy (TWCA) Fine Arts department presented its production of “Newsies – The Broadway Musical” during the first week of February. More than 50 talented students and staff at TWCA took the stage and shined bright at the newly opened Black Box Theater (one of the largest in Houston) at The Benjamin Wells School of the Arts on campus.
The cast and crew kicked off the show on Tuesday, February 4, for a special faculty and staff performance and then again on Wednesday evening, February 5, for the Warrior Boosters (proud sponsors that promote school spirit and support the Athletic and Fine Arts Programs). The four public shows from Feb 6-8 had sold-out crowds cheering on this outstanding production!
Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, the musical is about the unwavering determination of a group of young, working-class kids fighting for what’s right. “Newsies speaks to the universal struggle for justice, solidarity, and the power of community,” Director Palvin Williams said. “This story resonates just as deeply as it did when it was first written.”
The world of Newsies is one of contrasts: from the bustling streets of New York, teeming with life and opportunity, to the shadowy offices of powerful newspaper moguls who exploit the very kids who bring their stories to life.
Director of Fine Arts Phil Sweger describes why this production resonates today. “The story the students share on stage parallels The Warrior Way of TWCA. In this musical performance, the narrative highlights friends Serving Others, Fighting for Truth, and Leading by Example. As the audiences are transported back to 1899 New York City, they have been wowed by wonderful singing, fast feet, and a story that captures hearts,” Sweger said.
With cast members from the Middle School, High School, and even surprise appearances by teachers, the Newsies production at TWCA highlighted the multitude of talents at Woodlands Christian. Even a couple of “littles” on campus made appearances on stage as one of our Kindergarteners and Third Graders joined in the fun as part of our Auction & Gala winners of “Cast Members for a Show.” All the students and staff behind the scenes in the roles of stage manager, costume designer, dance captain, photographers, set designers, musical director, director, assistant director, and choreographer brought this show to life!
