MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the unanimous approval of a 64-bed jail expansion by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. This critical initiative reinforces Sheriff Wesley Doolittle’s unwavering commitment to public safety and the preservation of law and order in our rapidly growing community.

“This expansion is not simply about adding beds; it’s about upholding the rule of law,” stated Sheriff Doolittle. “It ensures that those accused of violating our laws are held accountable and detained throughout the judicial process, safeguarding our citizens and upholding the principles of justice upon which our Constitution is built.”

Montgomery County has experienced unprecedented population growth, reaching 711,354 residents in 2023—a 14.6% increase since 2020. Projections indicate continued growth, with an estimated population of 750,000 by the end of 2025. This expansion directly addresses the increasing demands placed on our law enforcement system.

Sheriff Doolittle, alongside Chief Deputy Zitzmann, Assistant Chief Deputy Hensley, and Captain Richards, presented the variance request to the Jail Commission in Austin, where it received unanimous approval. The approved plan allows for cost-effective operational adjustments and minor construction modifications while strictly adhering to state standards.

“This administration is committed to fiscal responsibility while ensuring public safety,” states, Sheriff Doolittle. “This expansion is a proactive approach to dealing with growth, maintaining high standards of safety and security, and ensuring that justice is served. We will continue to explore innovative solutions to protect our community.”

This achievement highlights the strong collaboration between the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, the Commissioners Court, the Criminal and County Courts at Law, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. These partnerships are vital to preserving Montgomery County’s values and way of life.
