Important issues on an Election Day most people don’t know is coming

THE WOODLANDS, TX – In the still-reeling-on-both-sides aftermath of the November general election, it’s easy to think that politics will settle down for a bit. On the contrary, The Woodlands has already held another election this month for seats in village associations and design review committees. And May 3 has a much larger Election Day in store, even if most of you will only have to make a single choice.

Joint Election is May 3

The Joint Election in early May consists of numerous municipal elections for the county and some of the surrounding cities within it. A plethora of city council seats – three in each council of Montgomery, Shenandoah, Magnolia, Panorama Village, and Oak Ridge North, for example – are open for ballot-casting, even though a large number of them are already filled by incumbents running unopposed.

Conroe Independent School District’s Board of Trustees are safely snuggled in their current positions for this year, as are those in Tomball ISD. However, TISD has ordered an election process for a $429 million school bond under four separate propositions that will have far-reaching implications. The Magnolia and Montgomery school districts, however, are in election mode. So are different MUD (municipal utility district) issues.

A large issue, however, and pretty much the only one of true concern to Woodlanders, is the controversial $480 million road bond that Commissioners Court recently approved to be sent to the polling locations. With each of the four precincts in Montgomery County slated to receive $120 million in slices of the road bond pie, it would behoove residents of The Woodlands and Montgomery County in general to contact their respective commissioners to see what’s on their to-do lists.

April 3 is the deadline to register to vote for this particular election; new voters should be aware that there isn’t an online option in Texas to register. To check your registration status, learn how to register, and get early voting information, visit www.elections.mctx.org.
