THE WOODLANDS, TX -- At The Woodlands Christian Academy, faith is expressed through action, and recently, a team of TWCA high school students demonstrated this by forming a cancer awareness legacy team called The Woodlands Warriors for a Cure. By partnering with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the Warriors team, led by Student Visionary of the Year* candidate sophomore Donovan Bowers, stepped out to bring awareness and make the world a better one without blood cancers.

"I was chosen as a candidate to lead our legacy team, The Woodlands Warriors for a Cure, to raise money to help people affected by Leukemia & Lymphoma for research, advocacy, and patient support," Donovan recently shared with us. "I've had family members affected by various types of cancer and who have passed from complications, so it's definitely a personal effort to help others."

Donovan took the lead and gathered 11 fellow Warriors equally passionate about cancer awareness. The Woodlands Warriors for a Cure team included Luke Azios, Donovan Bowers, Quinn Conrey, Evan D'Etcheverry, Quinten Frost, George Hromanik, Luis Masroua, Natalie Moore, Cassidy Perdue, Caden Powell, and Veronica Uribe. Most of the team has family members and friends who have passed from, survived, or been diagnosed with cancer.

To meet their goals, the Warrior team hit the pavement with an extensive outreach effort of letter writing, e-mails, connecting with local businesses, partnerships with gyms and other companies to set up awareness booths, and talking to everyone they could during this seven-week effort from January 9 to March 1, 2025. Their determination paid off by raising $19,000, plus increasing cancer awareness for a cure. This is a testament to the power of service and care. These tenacious young change-makers did all this in honor of blood cancer survivors and helping those in their fight against cancer.

"I decided to volunteer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society because of a personal calling and personal 'encounters' with leukemia. Many of my family members have had and beat cancer, and in their journeys with cancer, they have made lots of friends with Leukemia and Lymphoma." Caden Powell shared. "Both of these diseases are brutal, and I find it devastating that there is no found cure currently. So I feel like I was called to do something."

The funds that the Warrior team raised will help with cutting-edge research, free education and support for blood cancer patients and families, and advocacy and awareness that will drive changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers to care.

"This awareness initiative reflects our Warrior spirit by allowing us to serve others and honor God. By fundraising for this cause, we're helping those who can't help themselves. Jesus teaches us to love one another as He has loved us, and through this effort, we're putting that love into practice," Cassidy Perdue said. "We're using the blessings God has given us to support others and help find a cure to prevent this disease."

The dedication of these students reflects TWCA's values of developing young Christian leaders who serve and make a difference in the world. The Warriors for a Cure team is a true example of TWCA students leading by example and serving others, and, as Donovan said, "spreading God's Kingdom right here on earth!"

*The "Student Visionaries of the Year" is a philanthropic leadership development program through which highly motivated high-school leaders like Donovan and his teammates embark on a journey of professional growth, fostering professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management while working to raise as much as possible for LLS's mission as a global leader fighting against blood cancer.
