Cooper students place in top spots at SCI://Tech Exposition Competition

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Middle and Upper School students from The John Cooper School earned recognitions at the Education for Tomorrow Alliance SCI://Tech Exposition events hosted on January 31 and February 1 in Conroe.

Cooper students, seniors Taryn Chang and Sarah Darwin, junior Christopher Zupan and freshmen Michael Diemer and Jack Wade qualified to participate in the SCI://Tech Math Bowl competition on February 1. Eight teams were formed, each with a Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Statistics student from various Montgomery County schools and the top three teams were awarded medals. Zupan was a member of the team that captured first place, representing Cooper as the Pre-Calculus student. Darwin was on the second place team, representing Cooper as the Calculus student and Diemer was on the third place team, representing Cooper as the Algebra 2 student.

Freshman Kaitlyn Ramirez placed second in the 9th grade environmental category of the Senior High Science Fair for her project titled “Mississippi Nitrogen: A Dead Zone Culprit” and will move on to compete at the Science Engineering Fair of Houston on February 19 and 20. Ramirez’ project researched the possibility of using activated charcoal to remove nitrates from farm drainage that enters the Mississippi River and ultimately ends in the Gulf of Mexico, forming a dead zone. “My experiment worked, so there is potential for a very positive impact to the environment if it could work on a larger scale," Ramirez said.

Junior High students who finished in first seven places of the Jr. High Science Fair portion of SCI://Tech on January 31, also qualified to compete in Houston. Eighth graders who secured the top five places were: Ansaar Baig-1st, Energy and Transportation; Bjorn Overbeek-2nd, Botany; Krishna Chandra-3rd, Chemistry; Anton Pavlov and Nicolas Tapu-4th, Engineering/Computers/Math; Pierce Mitchell-4th, Botany; Grayson Sloop-4th, Environmental; Nari Mathis and Priyanka Vaidya-5th, Behavioral/Biochem/Medicine Health.

Seventh graders who finished in the top five were: Christopher McDonald and Omar Suki-1st, Behavioral/Biochem/Medicine Health; Kate Fisher and Tierney Gregory, 1st, Botany/Environmental/Zoology; Kate Burns-1st, Chemistry; Katie Evans-1st, Botany; Daniel Floris-2nd, Environmental; Jessica Young-2nd, Behavioral/Social; Bronson Burke-2nd, Biochemistry/Microbiology; Vandana Venkatesh-5th, Energy/Transportation; Joshua Strecker-5th, Physics/Astronomy; Dominic Beck-5th, Biochemistry/Microbiology.
